What Is a French Drain and How Does It Work?

A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe. Groundwater enters the gravel from the surrounding soil, flows into the pipe through small holes, and is carried by gravity to a discharge point such as a dry well, pop-up emitter, or storm drain.
How French Drains Work
The principle behind a French drain is simple: water follows the path of least resistance. When rain saturates the soil around your home or yard, that water is under hydrostatic pressure—it pushes outward and downward looking for somewhere to go. A French drain provides an easy path by replacing a strip of dense soil with loose, highly permeable gravel.
As groundwater migrates through the soil and reaches the gravel column, it flows freely between the stones and collects at the bottom of the trench where a perforated pipe sits. The pipe has rows of small holes or slots that allow water to enter from all sides. Once inside the pipe, gravity pulls the water along a gentle downhill slope toward the discharge point.
The system is entirely passive—no pumps, no electricity, no moving parts. As long as the gravel stays clean and the pipe maintains its slope, a properly installed French drain will intercept and redirect subsurface water indefinitely. That simplicity is what makes French drains the most reliable and widely used drainage solution for residential properties.
Components of a French Drain
The trench is the foundation of the system. It is typically 6–18 inches wide and 12–36 inches deep, depending on the application. Yard drainage trenches are shallower; foundation drains run deeper to reach the bottom of the footing. The trench must maintain a consistent downhill slope of at least 1% from the collection area to the discharge point.
Filter fabric (geotextile) lines the trench before any stone is placed. This non-woven fabric allows water to pass through while blocking fine soil particles—especially important in Twinsburg's clay soil—from migrating into the gravel and clogging the system over time. Without fabric, the gravel voids gradually fill with sediment and the drain loses capacity.
Washed gravel fills the trench around and above the pipe. We use clean, angular aggregate like #57 stone that creates large, consistent voids for water to travel through. Perforated pipe sits at the bottom of the gravel bed. Standard residential French drains use 4-inch corrugated or rigid PVC pipe with perforations. The pipe collects water from the gravel column and channels it to the outlet. Rigid PVC is more durable and resistant to crushing, while corrugated pipe is flexible and easier to route around curves.
Where French Drains Are Installed
Along foundations is one of the most common applications. A perimeter French drain intercepts groundwater before it reaches your basement walls, reducing hydrostatic pressure and preventing seepage. These drains sit at the depth of your footer and are especially critical for homes built on clay soil with high water tables.
Across yards to address low spots, soggy areas, or runoff from neighboring properties. A yard French drain collects water that pools on the surface or sits just below the turf line and redirects it to a lower elevation or underground storage. This is the solution for homeowners who cannot use their backyard for days after a moderate rain.
At the base of slopes and retaining walls where water naturally accumulates. If your property has a hillside that funnels runoff toward your home, a curtain-style French drain installed perpendicular to the water flow catches it before it reaches the structures below. Retaining walls also benefit from French drains that relieve the water pressure building behind them, preventing wall failure.
Maintenance and Longevity
A well-built French drain requires very little ongoing maintenance. The most important task is keeping the discharge end clear. If the outlet is a pop-up emitter, make sure grass clippings and mulch are not blocking the lid. If the system ties into a catch basin, clean the grate seasonally to prevent debris buildup.
Avoid planting trees or large shrubs directly over the drain path. Root systems will find their way into the gravel and eventually into the pipe perforations, restricting flow. If roots do become a problem, a plumber's snake or hydro-jetting can clear them, but prevention is far easier.
Properly installed French drains with quality filter fabric and washed gravel last 15–25 years in Twinsburg's clay soil before the gravel bed may need flushing or replacement. Systems without fabric or with inferior materials often fail within 3–5 years, which is why material quality and installation technique matter far more than choosing the lowest bid.
