How Deep Should a French Drain Be?

French drain depth depends on the purpose. Yard drainage drains are typically 12–18 inches deep. Foundation protection drains need to reach 18–36 inches, installed at or below the footing level. Curtain drains vary based on how deep the water table sits in the soil.

Depth by Purpose

The right depth for your French drain is not a guess—it is determined by the specific problem the drain needs to solve. A drain that is too shallow misses the water it is supposed to intercept. A drain that is deeper than necessary increases excavation cost without improving performance.

Surface and shallow drainage (12–18 inches) handles the most common residential issue: water that pools on or just below the turf. A French drain at 12–18 inches captures this shallow water table and redirects it before it reaches your lawn surface. Moderate-depth drains (18–24 inches) serve as interceptors for runoff moving downhill through the soil. A curtain drain at this depth, installed perpendicular to the water flow, catches it before it reaches your home or saturates your lawn.

Foundation Drain Depth

Foundation perimeter drains operate under a strict rule: the bottom of the drain pipe must sit at or below the top of the footer.
