You hear it all night: your sump pump kicks on, runs for a minute, shuts off, and then starts again five minutes later. Over and over, day after day, burning through energy and wearing out a pump that should last a decade. We typically install a dry well using a large perforated chamber surrounded by drainage gravel, sized to hold the volume of a full pump cycle so the system never overwhelms the surrounding soil.
Freeze Protection: Keeping the Discharge Working in Ohio Winters
Any conversation about sump discharge in NE Ohio has to address freezing. Our winters routinely drop below freezing for weeks at a time, and a frozen discharge line is worse than a short one because it causes the pump to work against a blockage, potentially burning out the motor or forcing water to back up into the basement.
