Spring in Northeast Ohio brings a combination of snowmelt, thawing ground, and heavy rain that puts more stress on your home's drainage system than any other time of year. The Twinsburg area typically receives 3 to 4 inches of rain per month from March through June, on top of whatever snowpack is still melting off. That water has to go somewhere, and if your drainage system is not ready, it ends up in your basement, crawl space, or yard. A 30-minute inspection before the wet season hits can save you from thousands of dollars in water damage. Here is what to check.
Check Your Downspouts and Gutters
Your roof collects more water than any other surface on your property. A typical 2,000-square-foot roof generates over 1,200 gallons of water per inch of rain. If that water is not directed well away from the foundation, it becomes the number one source of basement moisture.
Start by walking around the house and checking every gutter and downspout. Clear any leaves, shingle grit, and debris that accumulated over fall and winter. Check that the discharge line is clear by going outside and verifying that water exits at the discharge point when the pump runs.
If your pump has a battery backup, test it by unplugging the primary pump and triggering the backup with another bucket of water. Battery backups typically last 3 to 5 years, and a dead backup during a spring power outage is a recipe for a flooded basement. Replace the battery if it is more than 3 years old or if the backup fails the test. Walk Your Property After Rain
The most revealing drainage inspection happens during or immediately after a moderate rain. Put on boots and walk your entire property while the water is still moving. You will see things that are invisible when the ground is dry: where water pools, what direction it flows, where the low spots are, and whether the grade around your foundation is actually directing water away from the house.
Pay attention to areas where water sits for more than 24 hours after rain stops. Persistent standing water in your yard means the soil is saturated and the water has nowhere to drain. In the clay soils common throughout Twinsburg, Solon, Hudson, and Stow, standing water after every rain is a sign that the area needs a yard drainage solution such as a French drain, catch basin, or dry well.
Look for new erosion channels, especially on slopes. Erosion that was not there last fall means water is flowing with more force or volume than the turf can handle. These hard-to-soft transitions are common spots where water concentrates and causes problems that grow worse each season.
Check for New Low Spots and Grade Changes

Fill any foundation-adjacent low spots with compacted topsoil, building the grade back up to at least 6 inches above the level 10 feet away from the house. Make sure the soil does not cover your siding or come within 6 inches of any wood trim, which creates moisture and pest entry points. If the settling is severe or recurring every spring, you may need a more permanent regrading solution.
Clean Catch Basin Grates and Drain Inlets
If your property has catch basins, channel drains, or any type of surface drain inlet, spring cleaning is not optional. Over the winter, leaves, sediment, sand from road treatment, and debris accumulate on and around drain grates. A clogged catch basin is worse than no catch basin at all because it gives the water a depression to pool in without any way to drain.
Remove each grate and clear out any debris from inside the basin. Check the outlet pipe at the bottom of the basin for blockages. A garden hose run through the outlet pipe will confirm whether it is clear and flowing. If you have a cleanout access point downstream, open it and check for sediment buildup in the pipe.
For French drain systems, check any cleanout caps for cracks or damage from winter and open them to flush the system with a hose. Running water through the cleanouts for a few minutes in early spring removes any fine sediment that migrated into the pipe over the winter and verifies the system is ready for the heavy rain season.
Inspect Your Foundation for Water Marks and Staining
Go into the basement and take a careful look at the foundation walls and floor. Water marks, efflorescence (white chalky deposits), staining, or damp patches tell you exactly where water has been entering. Even if the basement looks dry right now, evidence of past water intrusion means it will happen again when conditions are right.
Efflorescence is particularly telling. Those white mineral deposits form when water passes through the concrete, dissolves the minerals inside, and deposits them on the surface as it evaporates. The location of the deposits tells you which side of the house the water is coming from, which helps target the exterior solution.
Check where the basement wall meets the floor. If you see moisture or staining along this joint, the cause is almost always hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil outside the foundation, which means exterior grading, downspout management, or a French drain system is the real fix.
